چکیده

By a conservation law we mean a quantity constructed from the coordinates, velocities, accelerations, etc. of the system that does not change as the system evolves in time. When the equations of motion are second order, conservation laws typically arise as functions on the velocity phase (possibly with explicit time dependence). Conservation of energy, momentum and angular momentum are familiar examples. Conservation laws are also known as “constants of the motion”. They are allso called “first integrals” of the equations of motion. We will see why a little later. For example, consider a harmonic oscillator in one dimension. Let the generalized coordinate be x. The Lagrangian is

Noether Symmetries and Covariant Conservation Laws in Classical, Relativistic and Quantum Physics

We review the Lagrangian formulation of (generalised) Noether symmetries in the framework of Calculus of Variations in Jet Bundles, with a special attention to so-called “Natural Theories” and “Gauge-Natural Theories” that include all relevant Field Theories and physical applications (from Mechanics to General Relativity, to Gauge Theories, Supersymmetric Theories, Spinors, etc.). It is discuss...

Local conservation laws for the Maxwell-Vlasov and collisionless kinetic guiding-center theories.

With use of a recent variational formulation of the Maxwell-Vlasov and guiding-center theories [D. Pfirsch, Z. Naturforsch. A 39, 1 (1984)], the energy-momentum and angular momentum tensors for such theories are derived and the corresponding local conservation laws are proven. The energy-momentum tensor is shown to be symmetric in its spatial components while the angular momentum density is nat...

New symmetries and conservation laws for electromagnetic fields

It is well known that classical conservation laws of energy, momentum, angular momentum and center-of-energy movement of the electromagnetic field are the consequences of the Maxwell equations invariance with respect to Poincare transformations. However, the relativistic invariance does not exhaust all symmetry properties of these equations. A natural question arises whether there exist any oth...

Dual electromagnetism: helicity, spin, momentum and angular momentum

The dual symmetry between electric and magnetic fields is an important intrinsic property of Maxwell equations in free space. This symmetry underlies the conservation of optical helicity and, as we show here, is closely related to the separation of spin and orbital degrees of freedom of light (the helicity flux coincides with the spin angular momentum). However, in the standard field-theory for...

Conservation Laws on Riemann-Cartan, Lorentzian and Teleparallel Spacetimes

Using a Clifford bundle formalism, we examine: (a) the strong conditions for existence of conservation laws involving only the energy-momentum and angular momentum of the matter fields on a general Riemann-Cartan spacetime and the particular cases of Lorentzian and teleparallel spacetimes and (b) the conditions for the existence of conservation laws of energy-momentum and angular momentum for t...
